ABSTRACT
The letter yā 'is one of the hijaiyyah alphabets that has many functions in Arabic syntax. Hence, this paper aims to identify students' skills in differentiating the diversity of the functions of the letters in the objective questions. This study employed a qualitative method with a written test, interviews with eight (8( students from Madrasah Alsagoff Al-Arabiah, and a comparison of how students recognised the diversity of the functions mentioned. This study used the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy theory to measure the cognitive level of students at the second level, which is the 'understanding' level. The findings of this study will help the teacher to devise, diversify and improve the teaching of Arabic especially in syntactic subjects. It was found that students who used their cognitive level at the ‘understanding’ level gave variations of element forms in determining the diversity of the meaning of the letter yā 'in Arabic.
